SUMMARY:Bowers Springs volunteer maintenance opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Greetings to the generous Volunteers who help us keep our Conservation Properties and Trails System in good shape.  \n  \nYou’ve probably noticed that this has been a banner year for invasive species on conservation properties across the state. Trees are being engulfed by Poison Ivy vines and Bittersweet\, and Multiflora Rose has been spreading more quickly than we’ve seen in recent years (not to mention mosquitos).  \n  \nOne of Bolton’s most popular properties\, Bowers Springs\, has been hit particularly hard. In 2019\, we’d begun the implementation of a systematic\, multi-year invasives management program to get those destructive species under control. The Covid crisis interrupted our efforts significantly last summer and now we’re trying to get things back on the original track to full\, systematic control by 2022.  \n  \nWe’re essentially re-doing year two of our three year management plan\, and we kicked off this year’s work on Bowers Springs a few weeks ago.  We now need to expand our volunteer force significantly in order to complete the first of this year’s cutbacks before the Bittersweet begins going to seed. We’d love to have your help on either Saturday or Sunday next week(8/7 or 8/8) at Bowers Springs. \n  \nThe work sessions will run from 9am to 3pm on Saturday\, and from 12noon-4pm on Sunday if needed. This should allow us to complete our initial invasives cutback on the highest priority trails and meadow margins in time to prevent seed development.  \n  \nThe work on the climbing vines will include hand-cutting the risers at chest level with shears or loppers\, pulling the climbers down wherever possible\, and uprooting the vines by hand where possible. Areas too dense for uprooting by hand will be mowed flat with the Brush Hog. End Result looks like this \n  \nThe work on Multiflora Rose will be done by small teams using a weed wrench and other hand tools like a mattock and/or pry bar.  \n  \nMost of this work can be done as isolated individuals\, and we’ll do our best to spread volunteers out for Covid safety reasons.  \n  \nIf you are interested and available for work this weekend\, please let us know which day and what segment of your time you may be able to add to our efforts. (Reply to email or text to me below.) Thank you in advance for your interest and valuable efforts to help keep our Conservation land “in good hands”.  \nWe look forward to seeing you again next weekend! \n  \nBolton Trails Steering Group  \nLarry Kunz 508-868-6151 (mobile\, text) \nInfo@boltontrails.org \n  \nhttps://www.townofbolton.com/sites/g/files/vyhlif2836/f/events/trailcleanup08022021.pdf \n

SUMMARY:Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:As we are all looking for new things to do with or without our families\, here is something we can all participate in together while practicing social distancing! \nPlease register and participate in the Backyard BioBlitz! \nFor Bolton residents please use this link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-socially-distant-bioblitz-happening-right-in-your-own-backyard-tickets-100419453288?utm-medium=discovery&utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-source=strongmail&utm-term=listing \n  \n______________________________________________________________________________________________________ \n  \nA BIOBLITZ IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD! \nParticipants can contribute observations from home \nTo help thwart the Covid-19 pandemic\, thousands of events are being cancelled\, schools are closed\, and large groups are a thing of the past. What is a family to do? Well\, there is no better time to explore the flora and fauna in your own backyard. \nOn April 5th\, join us for a self-paced day of natural exploration that adheres to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. This BioBlitz is sponsored by Antioch University New England\, and you can participate from your own house and yard. \nA BioBlitz is a way of documenting the biodiversity of a property\, town\, or region by recording all of the species of plants\, animals\, fungi\, and other organisms within a designated location and time period (In this case\, 24 hours). \nIt could be a meal moth in your pantry\, the amphibians calling across the road\, the spiders in your house or under the gutters\, or the weeds in the garden. Any living organism you find. \nThere is no time commitment – upload 1 photo or 100\, anytime of day or night Sunday\, April 5th. And you don’t need to be able to identify the plants or animals you find. If you can find a plant or wild critter and take a picture of it you can participate as a BioBlitz observer! \n  \nPlease Register so we can contact you with any changes or updates. And please email your iNaturalist username to BOTH event coordinators : (See ‘Important Instructions’ below) \n  \nSteven Lamonde – slamonde@antioch.edu \nSara Lobdell – slobdell@antioch.edu \n  \nIMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS \nIn order for your observations to be included in the Socially Distant BioBlitz\, you’ll need to take the following steps. Experienced iNaturalist users can skip to Step 3. \n  \n\nLog In or Sign Up for iNaturalist (www.inaturalist.org).\nDownload the iNaturalist App to your Smartphone (recommended) App for iOS (Apple products) or App for Android\, or learn how to upload your camera photos to the iNaturalist website (www.inaturalist.org/pages/getting+started#web).\nEmail your iNaturalist username to event coordinators Steven Lamonde (slamonde@antioch.edu) and Sara Lobdell (slobdell@antioch.edu). This will guarantee we add your name to the project filter\, which looks for observations from specific iNaturalist users (you!).\nOpen the Socially Distant BioBlitz iNaturalist project page. www.inaturalist.org/projects/socially-distant-bioblitz-4-5-2020\nClick on the JOIN Button in the upper right of the project page so you can easily navigate back to the project from your iNaturalist home page. Note\, this step does not replace Step 3!\nTake photos and upload them to iNaturalist! The project will update in live time as observation are submitted the day of the event\, so check in regularly to track our progress.
