More Quarry workings at Rattlesnake Hill Found
June 4, 2023
On Friday June 2, 2023, Bob and Alice Roemer were taking their usual walk over Rattlesnake Hill. While on the path between 2J and 2H it occurred to Bob that the route had been used by some heavy ox carts in the past suggesting that there may have been some historical lime quarrying further up the hill and beyond the so-called “cave” than had been previous thought. So Bob and Alice looked around for possible sites.
After looking up hill from 2J the evidence of quarrying became obvious along with some recent, regrettable, digging and scavenging. There were some pieces of excellent marble-like Bolton limestone among the excavated rocks indicating that this had been a high-quality source.
Note that there has been some recent unauthorized excavation at “The Cave” recently. It is illegal to remove rocks from conservation land and historical sites in Town.
Bob did some further research and by looking up his surficial geology files learned that Wallace Hansen had clearly identified this quarry in his superb report of 1956. Click here for details:
