Work on Two more Bridges at Vaughn Hills

In June 2024, work continued on building the wooden structures for 2 more bridges in the Moen area associated with the Vaughn Hills Conservation property. The team consists of Drew Schaubhut. Larry Kunz, Chris DeMers, Keith Silver and Gordon Taylor, assisted by others when available. Rebecca Bucciaglia obtained the materials via the Town’s arrangements with its suppliers and they will be subsidized significantly by a Mass Trails grant as noted in other posts.

Most treads were cut off site in the Town Hall parking area over a weekend and Rebecca arranged to have them moved to the site.

These two bridges cross a brook running through the property and will be strong enough for many types of users.

If you have walked around there recently, you might have noticed the piles of wood that have been accumulating at one or two places.

The bridges will be complete when ramps up to the surface are constructed by using rip rap and hard pack, landscape cloth is laid over the wood and a peastone surface covers the whole structure.

6″X6″ stringers in 10’and 12′ lengths
Pea stone for the final surface
4″x6″x6′ treads stacked and ready for use
Arranging the footings – some big roots of old dead trees had to be cleared.
The old bridge structure was repurposed as a bog bridge over a nearby wet spot
In one case the work took more than one session, so a temporary bridge was made by laying stringers over the brook
The second bridge required a hand rail
