Rattlesnake Trail color-coding Project
September 9, 2025
This spring, Bolton Trails Committee volunteers worked with the Town of Bolton on this grant-sponsored initiative. The grant from The Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area was obtained by the Rebecca Bucciaglia: The Town of Bolton Conservation Agent.
The Rattlesnake Conservation Area—Bolton’s largest town-managed property at 438 acres—now has color-coded trail markings to help visitors navigate with ease! Each trail is marked with distinct colors and unique shapes, making it easier than ever to explore: Orange, Yellow (Bob Horton Trail), White (Bolton Loop Trail), Blue, and Green.

In addition to these improvements, new maps are available to further enhance your trail experience. Special markings have also been added along the 1.1-mile Bob Horton Trail, a unique self-guided ecological and historical walk that begins at the Lime Kiln section of the Conservation Area right off Route 117.
A special thank you to Gordon Taylor, who spent countless hours mapping the trails to ensure accuracy and clarity.
This effort wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our incredible volunteers, who put in over 170 hours of fieldwork to bring this project to life: Chris DeMers, Leslie DeMers, Larry Kunz, Drew Schaubhut, Dan Shaw, Paxton Shaw (age 3!), Keith Silver, Betsy Taylor-Kennedy, and Gordon Taylor.
These updates ensure that Bolton’s trail users can explore the trails with confidence while learning about the rich ecological and historical significance of this beautiful area.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
