Haynes-Wheeler Sign Replaced
October 10, 2024
The Haynes-Wheeler property was a gift to the Town by Levi Wheeler in 1970. Levi had lived at his
grandparent’s home on Sawyer Rd. in what is now the Schultz Farm house. This property is mapped along with the Fyfeshire Conservation land (https://boltontrails.org/map15) For many years, there was a wooden sign suspended by rods from metal posts overlooking Wattaquadock Hill Road. The rods were screwed into the top of the wood. At some point the wood rotted and fell off the posts, the chains eventually rusted away and the posts stood by themselves, unused for a very long time.
During the pandemic, Gordon Taylor routed a new sign in rescued wood that was left at the Conservation Commission’s storage container at Bolton Town Hall. The new sign was left for a while but in the Summer of 2024 was painted in the standard brown and white of the Bolton Conservation Commission. Also a metal bracket arrangement was assembled so that the sign could be installed on the existing posts. At the same time, Gordon routed the tree logo into a piece of wood. The metal posts were not affected by any corrosion; flaking paint was the only problem.
Over a week starting on 5 October a team of Chris DeMers, Larry Kunz, Betsy Taylor-Kennedy and Gordon Taylor scraped and sanded the posts, painted them and installed Gordon’s new sign.
